This week is all about getting closer to ancient Greece. We are at the heart of Greco /roman culture while along the west coast of the Peloponnese peninsula and of course the scenery is clearly part of what brought
civilisation on to these shores! The combination of this and being far away from distraction and day to day life, encourages us to find total relaxation on board of the New Horizons.
We start our cruise on Saturday in the bay of Koroni. Our tender will bring you to your home for the next week, the New Horizons. It is waiting for you in the harbour, to start your sailing cruise along the Peloponnese peninsula.
As we lift the anchor, this incredible journey will first take us to south east Messinia, at the first leg of the Peloponnese peninsula, we will find picturesque Methoni overlooking the Ionian Sea and the island comlex of Oinousses.
Next on the horizon is Katakolon, gateway to Olympia. Katakolon is a small port and beach town in western Greece, facing the Ionian Sea. It is the second busiest port in all Greece, after Piraeus. And it’s most famous for Olympia, the ancient site where the Olympic Games were born on the 8thcentury BC –basically the reason cruise ships stop there at all. Visiting Katakolon is to grasp a more authentic side of Greece, not always easy to see in more manicured places.
Olympia, ruined ancient sanctuary, home of the ancient Olympic Games, and former site of the massive Statue of Zeus, which had been ranked as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Olympia is located near the western coast of the Peloponnese peninsula of southern Greece, 10 miles (16 km) inland from the Ionian Sea, near a point where the Alpheus (Alfios) and Cladeus (Kladios) rivers meet. Set amid an idyllic countryside consisting of low, wooded hills alternating with farmland, the Olympia archaeological site is of outstanding cultural significance. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1989.
As we lift the anchor, this cruise continues to the Ionian islands of Zakynthos and Kefalonia. Sami is a beautiful coastal town located in Kefalonia. Sami is a perfect stop for the New Horizons. The delightful waterfront, the wide paved streets and the Venetian buildings offer the village a unique charm and reflect the rich heritage of the island. The main coastal road consists of modern amenities, shops and lovely cafes overlooking the busy port. A number of restaurants are found nearby as well as pretty accommodation for all tastes and budgets. Sami is surrounded by a dream landscape of verdurous imposing hills and stunning coves. The village is home to some of the most interesting monasteries and sights in Kefalonia like the monastery of Agrilia, as well as beautiful caves (like Karavomylos and Dragati), some stunning underground lakes like the one at Melissani and Antisamos beach.
As we sail further, we will visit Vasiliki. As well as being a handy ferry hub for Kefallonia and Ithaki, this friendly harbour village, complete with stony beach, is one of the top places to learn windsurfing in Greece, thanks to its breezy conditions. A tasty clutch of eucalyptus-shaded tavernas fringes the waterfront, while boutique shops line the short street that connects the harbour with the main road.
Considered as the Caribbean of Greece, Lefkada island amazes visitors with the exotic blue colour of its beaches. Connected to the mainland through a small bridge. This is the perfect place for families, couples and large groups of friends, as it has something for everyone. The beaches, on the western coast of Lefkada Greece, distinguish for the wonderful colour and the impressive landscape, particularly Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma. Around the island, visitors can find lovely villages with fish taverns by the sea and surrounded by lush greenery. Nidri, Sivota, the Town and Agios Nikitas are beautiful places with special character each one.
This cruise is much more than just a vacation. It provides unique experiences that create memories that will last for a lifetime!
You have the Friday to explore Lefkada. Despite its small size, glorious beaches, sophisticated capital and easy accessibility, Lefkada remains, along with tiny Ithaca, one of the Ionian’s most unspoiled destinations.
Saturday, the final day. The guests that stay on board for another week, say goodbye to old friends that will leave today and ahoy to the new friends that arrive for another week of discovery. This next journey will take the New Horizons along the southern coastline of Italy from heel to toes, exploring its many treasures, and discovering a unique part of Italy.
Last touch of Crete and on to the irreplaceable feeling of seeing the land the birthplace of the Olympics. What a backdrop for a chilled out yoga week!
During this week, you fill up your senses while we sail out of the Ionian through historic canals on to classic Corfu the springboard to connect with Italy.
