During this week, you fill up your senses while following the south coastline of Sicily, exploring its ancient past, and discovering beautiful bays and villages. The combination of this and being far away from distraction and day to day life, encourages us to find total relaxation on board of the New Horizons.
We start our cruise on Saturday in Mazara del Vallo. Our tender will bring you to your home for the next week, the New Horizons. It is waiting for you in the harbour of this most striking example of the interlacing of civilizations that took place in Sicily between the European populations and those of Islamic and the North African region. Situated in the western part of the island, Mazara has maintained its maritime vocation derived from ancient times through the centuries, becoming one of the most important fishing ports of the Mediterranean Sea.
The southern coast and hinterland mark a welcome break from the volcanic fixation of the blacker lands to the north: here the towns are largely spacious and bright, strung across a gentler, unscarred landscape that rolls down to endless long sandy beaches and the sea.
Sciacca is our first destination. The tourism potentials are diverse. In the historic city center a large part of the sixteenth-century ramparts with three almost completely intact city gates still exist. You will find the largest concentration of historic buildings throughout the region. Rich religious traditions are still maintained, such as religious processions and the old carnival. Sciacca is a spa by the presence of thermal baths. It has a fishing port and a marina. On either side of the city are main beaches.
We set sails for Agrigento, one of the most beautiful cities in Sicily. It rises on a plain sheer above the sea. The Valley of the Temples is situated near the sea and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as an important archaeological trace from ancient Greek civilization. Temple of Concordia in AgrigentoSeven sacred places are known from their ruins and remnants. One of these is the Temple of Hera, with its rectangular plan and 34 columns, the Temple of Concordia, still in a state of perfect preservation, and the Temple of Castor and Pollux. The temples built in tuff assume a golden color in the sunset, creating a surreal landscape. Atop the hill overlooking the Valley of the Temples is contemporary Agrigento, the “magnificent city” and a trove of art treasures.
Next on the horizon is Licata. The city has its roots in prehistory and its beautiful sea often returns precious treasures: from the anchors of the ancient Roman and Byzantine ships, to the relics dating back to the allied landing, which took place right in Licata coastline. The relics of some Punic and Roman ships remind us that Licata’s sea was the scene of a famous naval battle between Romans and Carthaginians. The centre of action is Piazza Progresso, which divides the two main streets, Corso Roma, flanked by elegant baroque palazzi, and Corso Vittorio Emanuele. At the top of town, a 16th-century castle affords views down to the harbour.
We continue along the south coast of Sicily to Scoglitti, a peaceful seaside resort which is increasing in popularity thanks to the region’s natural attractions and a sea of unparalleled beauty. As an old fishing village it has an important port and fish market with fresh fish arriving every day from the open sea. It is a lively, rapidly growing destination which could now be a little too noisy for anyone looking for peace and quiet. With beautiful golden sandy beaches everywhere, beach facilities and a deep blue sea, it is quite busy in summer. If you’re looking to stretch out in the sun in a peaceful spot we recommend that you go a little further from the town along the Spiaggia della Forestale beaches which are still remote and relatively deserted with grassy sand dunes and little more than the sound of the waves to disturb you.

Our final destination for this cruise is Ragusa, one of the most picturesque towns in Sicily. The view from the upper town over Ragusa Ibla on its own separate hilltop is quite breathtaking. One of the UNESCO-listed Baroque towns of south-eastern Sicily. The best activity in Ragusa is wandering; meandering along the character-filled lanes of Ragusa Ibla or clambering up the steps towards the upper town and enjoying the great, classic view over Ibla. This is an inviting town for even more leisurely pursuits – a long drink at a cafe table on the pretty sloping piazza in front of the Duomo, a wine-flavoured gelato, a splendid meal at one of the town’s small restaurants or a stroll in the park.
You’ll have the whole Friday of the cruise to relax on board or discover typical Sicilian life in Ragusa or its beaches, as we can bring you ashore with the tender.
Saturday, the final day. The guests that stay on board for another week, say goodbye to old friends that will leave today and ahoy to the new friends that arrive for another week of discovery. This next journey will take the New Horizons from Sicily to Gozo and Malta. During this week, you fill up your senses while cruising through blue water, watching the beautiful coastline of Malta, gazing at millions of stars and meeting dolphins.
