During this sailing cruise, you will absorb the absolute and sheer beauty of the south western coastline of Italy, exploring its settlements, and enjoying the beautiful beaches. The combination of this and being far away from distraction and day to day life, encourages us to find total relaxation on board of the New Horizons.
We start our cruise on Saturday in Taormina. Towards the north, running up to Messina, are the Peloritani mountains, home to millennial villages, deep valleys and stunning views. We pass the strait of Messina and leave Sicily behind us. On our starboard side is Calabria, at the toe of the boot, the extreme south of Italy. The warm climate, the beautiful colors of the sea, rocky coasts that alternate with sandy beaches, a nature that is wild and mysterious, the strong and genuine flavors of local food and the vestiges of its ancient origins make Calabria a unique place.
Any wish can be fulfilled here. Those who love nature, its scents and mysteries, can explore the Calabrian hinterland, discovering pure and unpolluted sceneries, where huge green belts alternate with blue lakes and waterfalls. On the other hand, those who prefer basking in the warm rays of the sun and dive into a crystal-clear sea can choose from the many charming beaches.
As we sail along the Calabria coast line to the north, you’ll be amazed by this land of ancient settlements, is full of splendid churches, monasteries, castles, palaces and towns where age-old traditions still survive.. When you see the breath-taking beauty and the pure landscapes of Calabria, suddenly life is simple. Calabria is a compinesion of rich history, amazing gastronomy and beautiful beaches.
We will definitely visit Tropea, a small town on the east coast of Calabria, in southern Italy. It’s known for its clifftop historic center, beaches and prized red onions. Built on a former Byzantine cemetery, the 12th-century cathedral has marble sarcophagi and a painting of the Madonna of Romania, the town’s protector. Nearby is a viewpoint over the hills. The centuries-old Santa Maria dell’Isola Church is on a rock overlooking the sea.
Another must-see during this cruise is a town, called Diamante. It sparkles like the gem it’s named for. It’s not certain why it’s called Diamante, but the town’s history does go back several millennia, first to the Focesi people and then the Romans. It was an important trade point between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ionian Sea. Diamante gained status in the Middle Ages when it was under the feudal authority of the Sanseverino family and the prince ordered defenses to be built against possible Saracen invasions.
Diamante, the town and the coast, are so attractive that they have been used as the set for several films and TV shows. You’ll find a pretty point where the town overlooks the sea on a sort of triangular promontory, with beaches stretching off to the north, and a long seafront promenade to the south. There are a variety of beaches to enjoy, some with sand some with pebbles, interrupted by rocky pieces to form little coves. All told, there are eight kilometers of beach to enjoy here on the coast that is called “The Cedar Riviera”.
The town itself has some charming atmosphere and, along with its stone buildings and cobbled lanes, you’ll find the many murals that have given Diamante the nickname of “city of murals” – more than 70 in all, painted by prominent artists on the walls of the town’s buildings. A lovely spot right off the coast here is the little island called Isola di Cirella.
This cruise is much more than just a vacation. It provides unique experiences that create memories that will last for a lifetime!
We also visit Dino. The north of the island is dominated by steep limestone cliffs over 80 meters high. Water erosion has given rise to many caves. And Thursday evening, we arrive at Maratea, where we drop anchor. Maratea is a hill village high above the sea on Italy’s southern coast. Because of its beautiful scenery and coastline it has been called “the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian”.
You’ll have the whole Friday of the cruise to relax on board, go to one of to the sandy beaches or discover enchanting Maratea as we can bring you ashore with the tender.
Saturday, the final day. The guests that stay on board for another week, say goodbye to old friends that will leave today and ahoy to the new friends that arrive for another week of discovery. This next journey will take the New Horizons along the beautiful coast of Basilicata, around the enchanting island of Capri and finally to Sorrento.
