Corsica has the best shoreline for hopping out and playing in small lagoons, bays and inlets. Ideal for families we should make the very best of this opportunity since we have a great dinghy to discover seaside treasures and explore their secrets. The combination of this and being far away from distraction and day to day life, encourages us to find total relaxation on board of the New Horizons.
We start our cruise on Saturday in the picturesque city of Bastia, Our tender will bring you to your home for the next week, the New Horizons. It is waiting for you in the harbour, to start your sailing exploration cruise of northern Corsica. There are none of the major touristic sites of Corsica here but you can enjoy outstanding scenery, quiet beaches and a nice, relaxed atmosphere.
At the north is the Cap Corse peninsula dotted with little fishing villages. You can easily spend two days exploring this beautiful area. We start on the eastern side in the morning and come down the western coast in the afternoon / evening to enjoy the best of the sunrises and sunsets.
Saint Florent is on the coast on the other side of the bottom of the Cap Corse peninsula from Bastia. It has a very pretty harbour and a small fort. The location, on a small promontory in a natural bay on the Mediterranean with a backdrop of mountains, the climate and the nearby beaches and scenery all together make Saint Florent a good place to visit. Saint Florent is a small town, needing only a morning to explore unless you get waylaid – as you will! – by the attractive harbour and cafes around the Place des Portes. The streets of the town are active and very pleasant to explore, as much in the evening as the daytime, and there are plenty of places to stop and eat or drink. Like many of the Corsican towns Saint Florent has a Genoise citadel, built in the 15th century. It is a sturdy round monument that looks out across the gulf below, giving us some lovely views.
We set sail for Ile-Rousse. With a reasonable beach to the south at Plage de Rindara, and small rocky islands to the north, Ile-Rousse is in a splendid setting. The architecture of the town, which includes some attractive buildings, largely dates from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. As we continue to the south we see the port town of Calvi appear in the Balagna region of north-west Corsica. It boasts the intrigue of traditional Corsican culture while effortlessly maintaining the comforts of a modern resort. You will find picturesque views of the coast and there are many enjoyable places to spend time both in Calvi itself and the surrounding region.
The Scandola Natural Reserve is a World Heritage Site to the south-west of Calvi, on the Cape Girolata peninsula. The reserve covers approximately 1000 hectares of sea, and is an exceptional sight even among the many natural wonders that you will discover in Corsica. There is no way to enter Scandola by car, and to enter by foot involves crossing very high mountains, so in practice the only way to enjoy the splendours of this coastline is by boat. Luckily you are on the New Horizons to discover some of the finest coastline to be found anywhere in Corsica. Strange rock formations emerge from the crystal clear sea in the Gulf of Girolata, and the coastline is peppered with jagged inlets and caves. Always beautiful but especially so later in the afternoon, as the rocks catch the setting sun. Set against the blue of the sea and sky, the colours and shapes are an extraordinary sight.
This cruise is much more than just a vacation. It provides unique experiences that create memories that will last for a lifetime!
Porto is a small village to the west of Corsica, ideally placed for exploring many of the highlights of this dramatically beautiful region of Corsica, with the Calanches de Piana, the Gorges de Spelunca and the Foret d’Aitone. You’ll have the whole Friday of the cruise to relax on board in the beautiful bay, or discover Corsica as we can bring you ashore with the tender.
Saturday, the final day. The guests that stay on board for another week, say goodbye to old friends that will leave today and ahoy to the new friends that arrive for another week of discovery. This next journey will take the New Horizons along the western coastline of Corsica, onwards to to the northern coast of Sardinia with destination Alghero.
Heard of Tuscany? Sure you have! Seen it by sail boat? Now is your chance. Plus explore the island of Elba and discover beautiful Corsica.
One of the most stimulating stretches of the Mediterranean. You fill up your senses while following the north eastern coastline of Sardinia towards Corsica.
