It provides unique experiences that create memories that will last for a lifetime. Join us on board!
During this sailing cruise, you feel the sense of being close to the very heart of Italy and fill yourself with the peace of the area, while following the western coastline of Italy, exploring small Italian villages, and enjoying nature, culture and Rome. The combination of this and being far away from distraction and day to day life, encourages us to find total relaxation on board of the New Horizons.
We start our cruise on Saturday in Gaeta, One of the most beautiful cities in the southern Italy Lazio region. Visiting Gaeta is a great way to get a feel for the best of southern Italy – great food, friendly locals, tons of ambiance and a sense of history that ties everything together. Gaeta’s tiny old city offers something for everyone.
We sail further along the Coast of Lazio to the north. Roman emperors preferred it. There is a ruin of a Nero villa at Anzio, Tiberius built a triclinium or dining room in a grotto so he could feed guests and make show off his sculptures in a cavity below Sperlonga, a beautiful seaside town to the south of Rome. Whitewashed houses are clustered together on a steep headland, the streets warren-like stairways that bring you to unexpected terraces above the sea. The old town is compact and charming, and a pleasure to explore.
As we continue our journey, we see small Italian villages on our starboard side. San Felice Circeo is a small town in the province of Latina, in the Lazio region of central Italy. It is included in that Circeo National Park. Sites include the Grotta Guattari, one of the oldest Neanderthal sites in Italy.
For nature lovers Circeo National Park lets you wander through 8,500 hectares of forest, coastal dunes, wetlands and islands. Anzio was a Volscian town, and the base for Coriolanus’s rebellion against Rome. Later the seaside town, called Antium, became a favourite with the emperors, who built luxurious villas and a theatre here. Nero was born in the town and the ruins of his villa can be seen along the low cliffs.
Thursday, we arrive at Ostia, where we drop anchor in an area, where history is all around. Ostia, at the mouth of the Tiber River, was founded around 620 B.C.; its central attraction was the salt gleaned from nearby salt flats, which served as a precious meat preserver.
Later, Rome conquered Ostia and when Rome controlled all the Mediterranean, Ostia served as its busy commercial port. Perhaps you want to explore Ostia Antiqua in the afternoon. Sitting on the top row of the ancient arena, you can scan the ruins of Ostia and let your imagination take you back 2.000 years to the days when this was ancient Rome’s seaport, a thriving commercial center of 60.000 people.
You’ll have the whole Friday of the cruise to relax on board, or discover the eternal city, Rome as we can bring you ashore with the tender. What can we say about Rome that has not been said. Everything and more is true. If this is your first visit to Rome, you might want to explore the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish steps and the Piazza Navona. Enough for one day of discovery.
This cruise is much more than just a vacation. It provides unique experiences that create memories that will last for a lifetime!
Rome was not build in a day, and you certainly cannot see it all in a day. If you are a regular to Rome, you can perhaps expand your experience by visiting the Catacombs, Necropolis, climb up the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica or just relax and soak up the atmosphere of the Italian lifestyle while enjoying a cappuccino.
Saturday, the final day. The guests that stay on board for another week, say goodbye to old friends that will leave today and ahoy to the new friends that arrive for another week of discovery. This next journey will take the New Horizons along the coasts of Lazio and Tuscany, visiting the enchanting Isola del Giglio with final destination, the lovely town of Talamone.
