It provides unique experiences that create memories that will last for a lifetime. Join us on board!
During this week, you fill up your senses while we sail out of the Ionian through historic canals, and on to classic Corfu. This pretty island made famous in so much literature. to Corfu is the natural springboard to connect with our next waters… Italy! The combination of this and being far away from distraction and day to day life, encourages us to find total relaxation on board of the New Horizons.
We start our cruise on Saturday in the bay of Lefkada. Our tender will bring you to your home for the next week, the New Horizons. It is waiting for you in the harbour, to start your sailing cruise towards Italy.
As we sail to the north, we will visit Preveza, which has an island atmosphere, centuries of history, delicious food and more beaches than you can imagine. The city greets you with a smile. Sandwiched between two bodies of water, the Ionian Sea and the Ambracian Gulf, Preveza will charm you with its lovely jetty, yacht-filled marina, dozens of restaurants and meze-bars, pedestrianised centre and stylish shops. Just outside town you’ll encounter Augustus, Antony and Cleopatra at ancient Nikopolis.
Next on the horizon is Corfu. Still recognisable as the idyllic refuge where the shipwrecked Odysseus was soothed and sent on his way home, Corfu continues to welcome weary travellers with its lush scenery, bountiful produce and pristine beaches. Since the 8th century BC the island the Greeks call Kerkyra has been prized for its untamed beauty and strategic location. Ancient armies fought to possess it, while in the early days of modern Greece it was a beacon of learning. Corfiots remain proud of their intellectual and artistic roots, with vestiges of the past ranging from Corfu Town’s Venetian architecture to British legacies such as cricket and ginger beer. While certain regions of the island have succumbed to overdevelopment, particularly those close to Corfu Town, Corfu is large enough to make it possible to escape the crowds. Venture across cypress-studded hills to find vertiginous villages in the fertile interior, and sandy coves lapped by cobalt-blue waters.
This cruise is much more than just a vacation. It provides unique experiences that create memories that will last for a lifetime!
On Thursday we set sail for Italy. Santa Maria di Leuca is the point of the peninsula’s stiletto heel. The Greeks called it Leukos, meaning brilliant sun, while the Romans called it “the place at the end of the earth”. Situated in the prime part of the Salento, Leuca is a paradise on a promontory between two seas. It has ancient origins, with paleolithic traces found in the grottoes that riddle the waterfront cliffs. There are Greek, Phoenician and Cretan inscriptions in the caves, too. There is a basilica occupying the top of the promontory, built over the remains of an ancient temple to Minerva.
You have the Friday to explore. Santa Maria di Leuca is in a good spot for exploring Lecce, Otranto, Gallipoli and other towns in the Salento area of Puglia. The marina is backed by a low hill and a lighthouse. There are both long sandy beaches and rocky coves along the cape fronting the clean sapphire waters. This is a fabulous place where you can enjoy both sunrise and sunset over two seas from the same spot!
Saturday, the final day. The guests that stay on board for another week, say goodbye to old friends that will leave today and ahoy to the new friends that arrive for another week of discovery. This next journey will take the New Horizons along the southern coastline of Italy from heel to toes, exploring its many treasures, and discovering a unique part of Italy.
This week is all about getting closer to ancient Greece. We are at the heart of Greco /roman culture while along the west coast of the Peloponnese peninsula.
To Italy! Puglia in its remote undeveloped beauty, and peace, to match the lap of water along our vessel, and glide across to interesting and vibrant Sicily.
Last touch of Crete and on to the irreplaceable feeling of seeing the land the birthplace of the Olympics. What a backdrop for a chilled out yoga week!
