The combination of this and being far away from distraction and day to day life, encourages us to find total relaxation on board of the New Horizons.
We start our cruise on Saturday in Syracuse. Our tender will bring you to your home for the next week, the New Horizons. It is waiting for you in front of a postcard bay with white sand and turquoise waters.
We will anchor in the Syracuse lagoon, from where you can visit the island of Ortygia. It’s difficult to get lost (it measures just 1km by 500 metres), but it is packed with over 2,500 years of history. Architectural styles vary widely, encompassing Greek and Roman remains, Mediaeval Norman buildings and a great deal of understated Baroque. Restaurants, trattorias and bars abound and it is especially nice to sit out on the western side in the late afternoon, warmed by the sun and while waving to the New Horizons.
Syracuse was the most important city of Magna Graecia. It defeated the mighty Athens in 413 and was home to many a great Greek, including the inimitable Archimedes. At the height of its economic, political and military powers, the city had a population of 300,000 and, according to Cicero, was “the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all”. There is plenty to see. The archaeological site, situated in the northwest of the town, is home to a staggering number of well-preserved Greek (and Roman) remains. The main attraction is undoubtedly the Greek theatre that dates back at least until the 5th Century BC.
The next coastline is called the Ionian Riviera, running up the east coast of Sicily from the bustling lava-stone city of Catania, through a series of charming fishing villages and beaches to the enchanting town of Taormina, is certainly one of Sicily’s most intriguing areas. The east coast Ionian Riviera has some of Sicily’s most picturesque pebbly and sandy beaches including those of Isola Bella, Mazzaro, Giardini Naxos and Letojanni.
We anchor near Riposto. This small town is little affected by tourism and has a fine food market. From here we can visit Mount Etna. The entire coastline is dominated by the magnificence of Mount Etna, whose presence has shaped the entire area both geologically and historically from time immemorial. Mount Etna is undisputed king of the area, and hiking on its slopes is an unforgettable experience. The towns and villages that dot the flanks of Etna, all built in lava stone, are well worth stopping off at for a stroll or a spot of lunch in a local trattoria.
This cruise is much more than just a vacation. It provides unique experiences that create memories that will last for a lifetime!
Thursday evening, we arrive at Taormina, where we drop anchor. This picturesque village draws more visitors than any other town in Sicily, thanks to its splendid position, its beaches and its Graeco-Roman theatre, whose view of Mount Etna hard to beat.
You’ll have the whole Friday of the cruise to relax on board, go to one of to the sandy beaches or discover enchanting Taormina as we can bring you ashore with the tender.
Saturday, the final day. The guests that stay on board for another week, say goodbye to old friends that will leave today and ahoy to the new friends that arrive for another week of discovery. This next journey will take the New Horizons along the beautiful coast north of Taormina, through the strait of Messina along the coast of Calabria, direction Maratea.
