During this week, you fill up your senses while we sail from Crete to the Peloponnese peninsula, discovering ancient treasures and exploring its enchanting coastline. The combination of this and being far away from distraction and day to day life, encourages us to find total relaxation on board of the New Horizons.
We start our cruise on Saturday in the bay of Kissamos. Our tender will bring you to your home for the next week, the New Horizons. It is waiting for you in the harbour, to start your sailing cruise towards the Peloponnese peninsula.
As we lift the anchor, this incredible journey will first take us to Kapsali, a nice village in the south of Kythira. It is located on two adjacent bays where fishing boats and tourist boats moor. In the middle of the two bays is a narrow peninsula on which the chapel of Agios Georgios is located next to the lighthouse.
When you stand on the middle peninsula and you look behind you, you will see the high cliffs and mountains in the hinterland, the Venetian castle of Chora and the white monastery of Agios Ioannis which is actually built into the rocks of a steep precipice. Here the Holy Agios Ioannis the Theologian would have begun his book the “Apocalypse” before he left for the island of Patmos. On the slopes of the mountain is a pine forest that makes the village look scenic. A lovely little bay is located west of the larger bay, between high barren rocks and is only accessible by foot. At these beaches of Kapsali you can enjoy all kinds of watersports. From Kapsali you have a fantastic view of the 200 meter high islet Avgo. On this islet are beautiful caves to explore
As we sail further, we see the western coastline with beaches and small coastal villages of Kythira pass by. Located on the southern side of Peloponnese, Kythira is a secluded island with relaxing atmosphere. Although Kythira island is considered part of the Ionian Sea, it is located far from the other Ionian islands. After a long time of Venetian occupation in the Medieval ages, this island has a vivid Venetian architecture, especially in Chora, the capital town. On a hill above Chora, there is a strong castle with breathtaking view to the Aegean Sea.
Next on the horizon is the Peloponnese peninsula. The Peloponnese is the stuff of legends. Literally. It is here that Hercules fought the Nemean lion and gods walked the earth, meddling in mortal affairs; it’s from here that Paris of Troy eloped with Helen and the Argonauts set sail in search of the Golden Fleece. Celestial and mythological charms aside, this region bears tangible traces of the many civilisations that once called it home, witnessed in its classical temples, Mycenaean palaces, Byzantine cities, and Ottoman, Frankish and Venetian fortresses
The very topography that kept invaders at bay for centuries – lofty, snowcapped mountains, vast gorges, sandy beaches and azure waters – now draws visitors of a very different kind. Hospitality is as strong here as anywhere in the country; the food is among Greece’s best; and the region’s vineyards are contributing to Greece’s wine renaissance. Locals claim to have the best of everything to give. And that’s no myth.
The first village on the peninsula we will see is Gerolimenas, a village with fishing port in south Mani peninsula. Its name means “old port” and in the past it used to be an important harbor which sent Maniot goods to Piraues and the island of Syros. Today the village is small and quiet but from all the rest places in this part of Mani, Gerolimenas is the most visited by tourists as it has a few tavernas and cafes. Gerolimenas is very picturesque with the old stone buildings on the background of fishing boats and blue sea. It also has a small sheltered pebbly beach.
This cruise is much more than just a vacation. It provides unique experiences that create memories that will last for a lifetime!
On Thursday we arrive at colorful Koroni, a place with insular atmosphere. Thanks to its strategic position, it has been an important trade and marine centre. But for the very same reason, it has always been coveted by the powerful of the times. That explains the need for building huge fortresses in the neighbourhood. You’ll have the rest of the Friday of the cruise to relax on board in the beautiful bay, or discover Olympia as we can bring you ashore with the tender.
Saturday, the final day. The guests that stay on board for another week, say goodbye to old friends that will leave today and ahoy to the new friends that arrive for another week of discovery. This next journey will take the New Horizons along the Peloponnese peninsula to the north, discovering authentic villages and exploring the best of two worlds.
