Elba, and Tuscany! A must for those that truly love or want to love Italy in all its splendour! Fill up your senses while following the Corsica coastline, exploring the south side island of Elba and discovering beautiful Tuscany. The combination of this and being far away from distraction and day to day life, encourages us to find total relaxation on board of the New Horizons.
We start our cruise on Saturday in charming Bastia, Corsica. Our tender will bring you to your home for the next week, the New Horizons. Filled with heart, soul and character, this bustling old port is a good surprise. It is an authentic snapshot of modern-day Corsica, a lived-in city that’s resisted the urge to polish up its image just to please the tourists. The historical neighbourhoods of Terra Vecchia and Terra Nova are especially vibrant.
As we set sails for our cruise, we see glorious Corsica on our port side. Though Corsica has officially been part of France for more than 200 years, it feels different from the mainland in everything from customs and cuisine to language and character, and that’s part of its appeal. Locals love talking about their Corsican identity so plenty of engaging evenings await, especially if the holy trilogy of food, wine and melodious Corsican music are involved.
We leave Corsica in eastern direction for the south coast of the island of Elba, famous around the world for harboring French Emperor Napoleon in 1814 during his exile. But its history goes back to prehistory, with the Ilvati tribe from Liguria who named the island Ilva. It was then inhabited first by the Etruscans and later by the Romans, who really appreciated the island and its rich deposits of iron and its mud baths. There are several memories of its glorious past as we visit the island, from the archaeological findings in its museums to the impressive fortresses and military constructions such as Castello del Volterraio and then on to the beautiful Napoleonic residences of the 1800s such as Palazzina dei Mulini.
What really makes Elba famous and renowned are its clear and blue sea and beautiful beaches. The extraordinary richness of its landscapes, both land and marine, turns the island of Elba into a unique destination in Tuscany. We can say that is a heaven on earth, with nothing to envy of more exotic Caribbean destinations. In addition, Elba is the perfect place for outdoor sports and activities. Among the most appreciated sports, there is diving and snorkeling in Elba, thanks to its rich seabeds housing lots of different species of fish. But outdoors lovers can also enjoy spending time on land hiking and mountain biking, enjoying a round of golf, a day of sailing or enjoying days of complete relaxation at the thermal baths of San Giovanni.
As we leave Elba, we sail towards Piombino. Sticking out into the sea atop an evocative promontory, facing the Tuscan Archipelago and rich in history and protected nature, Piombino is one of the main destinations along the Etruscan Coast. With ancient foundations – the first settlement dates as far back as the Stone Age – Piombino conserves important archeological remains, just like the stretch of coast along which the city’s territory lays. Historically known first as the port of Falesia, Piombino later became its own principality governed initially by the Appiani and later, at the beginning of the 1800s, by Elisa Bonaparte, Napoleon’s sister.
This cruise is much more than just a vacation. It provides unique experiences that create memories that will last for a lifetime!
You’ll have the whole Friday of the cruise to relax on board, or discover Tuscany as we can bring you ashore with the tender. Piombino is the ideal starting point for discovering the Etruscan Coast, as the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia sits just a short distance away, as do the beautiful beaches of the Gulf of Baratti, Buca delle Fate, Spiaggia Lunga and those in the Bays of Moresca, Perelli and Torre Mozza, coastal stretches famous for their unspoiled beauty.
Saturday, the final day. The guests that stay on board for another week, say goodbye to old friends that will leave today and ahoy to the new friends that arrive for another week of discovery. This next journey will take the New Horizons along the western coastline of Italy to the south, exploring its beaches, lagoons and clear blue water, and having a unique view on hidden treasures.
