During this week, you fill up your senses while following the western coastline of Italy, exploring intriguing sites and original Italian culture. The combination of this and being far away from distraction and day to day life, encourages us to find total relaxation on board of the New Horizons.
We start our cruise on Saturday in Sorrento, built on a historic site settled from prehistoric times onwards. Facing north over the Bay of Naples, it is situated towards the end of the mountainous Sorrentine peninsula, over the hills from the famous resorts of the Amalfi Coast. In mythology, this area is often identified as the land of the sirens, beautiful maidens of the sea whose song lured mariners to their doom. So, let’s play some chill lounge music onboard instead while we lift the anchor.
From Sorrento we set sail to Pompei. The dramatic events on August 24th of the year 79, immortalized the city of Pompei. The entire city was buried after an eruption of Mount Vesuvius and remained hidden under the rubble and lava for centuries. At the end of the 16th century, the first remains were discovered and since the 18th century, archaeological excavations have been going on. Today, Pompei is perhaps the best preserved Roman city. It paints an accurate picture of the daily life of the Romans. Pompei is UNESCO World Heritage. Besides ordinary houses, you will find a forum, amphitheater, baths, and temples to explore.
Next on the horizon is Portici, from where we can start a morning hike up Mount Vesuvius. The 30-minute ascent along a steep gravel path is suitable for most fitness levels. Peering inside the crater, you won’t see any gurgling lava, but your efforts will be rewarded with stunning views across the Bay of Naples.
Naples is a real treasure trove of art and history, of indelible signs from past dominations, each of which has contributed to this city’s construction. Its center, in particular, encompasses a heritage so rich that it has been designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site. 2,500 years of history is evidenced in palaces, churches, monuments and art galleries, amidst which the Napoletani carry on their daily lives with their trademark vivacity and creativity.
Just west of Naples is the city’s best-kept secret, the volcanic land known as the Campi Flegrei (meaning ‘burning fields’). See bubbling mud pits and steaming fumaroles at the Solfatara Crater and wander the remarkably preserved underground passageways of the Flavian Amphitheatre. Visit Greek ruins at Cuma or wander the remains of a Roman seaside resort at Baia.

We leave the mainland for the islands in the Bay of Naples. The volcanic outcrop of the Island of Ischia is the largest off them. It’s an intriguing concoction of sprawling spa towns, abundant gardens, buried necropolises and spectacular scenery, with forests, vineyards and picturesque small towns. From Ischia, we head north across the bay to Gaeta.
Thursday evening we drop anchor at Gaeta. You’ll have the whole Friday of the cruise to relax on board, go to one of to the sandy beaches or discover this nice town, as we can bring you ashore with the tender. Gaeta is one of the most beautiful cities in the southern Italy Lazio region, but you won’t find it in many guidebooks, in spite of its seven fabulous beaches. Gaeta’s tiny old city offers something for everyone. From hiking Monte Orlando to see ancient ruins to wandering the old, narrow streets to shop and eat. Or troll along the Lungomare (sea road) and watch fishermen ply their trade. Look up and see the walls of the Angevin-Aragonese castle, thick and strong, high above the city. Visiting Gaeta is a great way to get a feel for the best of southern Italy – great food, friendly locals, tons of ambiance and a sense of history that ties everything together.
Saturday, the final day. The guests that stay on board for another week, say goodbye to old friends that will leave today and ahoy to the new friends that arrive for another week of discovery. This next journey will take the New Horizons along the beautiful coast of Lazio with a visit to the eternal city, Rome.
