During this sailing cruise, you are lifted by the striking scenery and sheer peace of one of the prettiest places on earth, while following the south western coastline of Italy, exploring amazing beaches, and enjoying the delightful coastal villages. The combination of this and being far away from distraction and day to day life, encourages us to find total relaxation on board of the New Horizons.
We start our cruise on Saturday in Salerno with its vibrant historic centre, where medieval churches share space with neighbourhood trattorias, trendy wine bars and boutiques. There is an amazing tree-lined seafront promenade widely considered to be one of the most beautiful in Europe.
After lifting the anchor we are heading towards the south along the Campania coastline direction Punta Licosa, a delightful point on the Cilento coast. Named for the siren Leucosia from Homer’s epic, Odyssey, who is said to have been one of the three sirens (or mermaids) whose songs lured sailors to shipwreck on the rocks. Odysseus had to be tied to the mast to keep from succumbing to their melodic allures. The mythical Leucosia, after failing to bring destruction to Odysseus, was thrown into the abyss of the sea and washed up on an island which was named after her. Located off the tip between San Marco di Castellabate and Ogliastro Marina, there is a lighthouse on the little island that stands guard to keep sailors safe.
From there, it’s on to Maratea, the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian. If you are searching for an adventure and want to avoid the usual tourist trail of the more popular coastal towns, experience the beautiful and vivid contrast of the mountains reaching down into the Tyrrhenian Sea. The landscape of this area is dramatic, with plunging cliffs leading to a network of beautifulcoves hidden amongst the rocks. With white, sandy beaches, sea caves and breathtaking mountains, this area is increasingly popular with Italians.
After Maratea, we set sails for Diamante. Jutting out into the aquamarine waters of the Mediterranean, the windows of Diamante reflect the sharp light of the hot Calabrian sun. The city is famous for its murals that were initiated in the 1900’s by artists who wanted to paint but couldn’t afford canvas. Today, the narrow streets within the town, drip with colour, expression and creativity, artists have poured into the city. Diamante is considered by Italians one of Italy’s prettiest towns and is without question one one of the country’s most artistically inspiring. In spite of its colourful appeal however, Diamante is also one of Italy’s most over-looked beautiful cities, by travelers to the Southern regions of the country. Diamante, not only famous for the mural works which cover the city’s walls, has centuries, been renowned throughout Italy for the hot peppers, which hang from every balcony, known as Peperoncini, used in any number of Calabresi dishes, such as the spicy Sopressatta sausage.
This cruise is much more than just a vacation. It provides unique experiences that create memories that will last for a lifetime!
Our final destination for this cruise is Amantea, a seaside resort in the region of Calabria, in the south of Italy. The town lies on the Tyrrhenian coast between Paola and Lamezia Terme. It has a very attractive old centre on a hill above the modern town and a long stretch of beach. Off the main tourist trail, Amantea is a perfect spot for finding tranquility. You can plot the history of Amantea’s development through the age and styles of the town’s buildings: the nucleus up on the hillside protected by fortifications, urban streets beginning to reach out along the slopes, moving down to the foot of the hill then spreading out to the seaward side of the bay and finally, thanks to seaside tourism, filling up the whole stretch of level ground between the hills and the sea.
You’ll have the whole Friday of the cruise to relax on board, or to discover Amantea’s beach, long and wide, made up of gravel, stones and sand. A few small boats are pulled up on the shingle; reminders that Amantea was once a fishing village. In the height of summer, when Italians take their holidays, the beach establishments and little cafes on terraces are lively and colorful.
