Now for this week we are exploring some of the more classic islands along the south western coastline of Italy, exploring extraordinary sites, and enjoying the enchanting views. You can’t get more Italian Classic than Capri! The combination of this and being far away from distraction and day to day life, encourages us to find total relaxation on board of the New Horizons.
We start our cruise on Saturday in Maratea, the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian. Towards the north, we’ll discover the Basilicata coast. If you are searching for an adventure and want to avoid the usual tourist trail of the more popular coastal towns, experience the beautiful and vivid contrast of the mountains reaching down into the Tyrrhenian Sea. The landscape of this area is dramatic, with plunging cliffs leading to a network of beautifulcoves hidden amongst the rocks. With white, sandy beaches, sea caves and breathtaking mountains, this area is increasingly popular with Italians.
We sail further along the Coast of Cilento National Park and anchor at Palinuro, a beautiful coastal village. The town is located at the foot of a promontory and, with quite a scenic outlook, it mirrors itself in the clean blue sea. From the sandy beaches rises the imposing Capo Palinuro, as to jealously protect this heavenly place.
On the top of Capo Palinuro there are the weather-station and the white light house. The Lambro river, which debouches near the cove of Marinella, separates the promontory from the hill of Molpa, which is the seat of an ancient village and according to the legend, the home of the mermaids. To the north, the town of Palinuro slopes down to the Ficocella, which ideally is the continuation of the vast beach of Saline. The Archetiello (small arch) and Arco Naturale (natural arch) are magnificent sculptures moulded in the rock by the force of the wind.
We will also visit Salerno, which may initially seem like a typical Italian big city, but the place has a charming individuality, especially around its vibrant historic centre, where medieval churches share space with neighbourhood trattorias, trendy wine bars and boutiques. The city has invested in a tree-lined seafront promenade widely considered to be one of the most beautiful in Europe.
Next to explore is Italy’s Amalfi Coast, sprinkled with stunning seaside towns. The allure of the Amalfi Coast’s natural beauty has been drawing people to the region long before it had a name. Its dramatic charm and idyllic weather enticed ancient Roman nobles to build their villas there, a real estate trend that, overtime, never faded.
Today the mountains and sea cliffs are dotted with pastel confections of holiday homes and sumptuous villas, which have elevated the coastline to one of the most fabulous and unique destinations in the world. Its fragile cultural landscapes with churches, gardens and vineyards were listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1997. Positano is the Amalfi Coast’s most photogenic town, with vertiginous houses tumbling down to the sea in a cascade of sun-bleached peach, pink and terracotta. Best to be viewed from the New Horizons of course.
This cruise is much more than just a vacation. It provides unique experiences that create memories that will last for a lifetime!
After lifting the anchor at Amalfi, we set sails for Capri, already inhabited in the Palaeolithic period. The island was briefly occupied by the Greeks before Emperor Augustus made it his private playground and Tiberius retired here in AD 27. Its modern incarnation as a tourist centre dates from the early 20th century. Capri’s fabled beauty and refined hedonism has charmed them all, from Roman rulers and Russian revolutionaries to Hollywood legends. It’s the perfect microcosm of Mediterranean appeal, a fusion of glittering grottoes and coves, Roman ruins and chichi piazzas.
Thursday evening, we arrive at Sorrento, where we drop anchor in an extraordinary area where sea and mountain, deep valleys and citrus groves plateaux alternate. There is something for everyone here. You can choose from nature and silence to culture, swims, thermal treatments and naturalistic walks. This sun-kissed town of radiates old world charm. Meander the crisscrossing, cobbled shopping alleys of the old town flush with leather goods, ceramics, limoncello and the town’s world-famous inlaid wood.
You’ll have the whole Friday of the cruise to relax on board, go to one of to the sandy beaches or discover fascinating Sorrento, as we can bring you ashore with the tender.
Saturday, the final day. The guests that stay on board for another week, say goodbye to old friends that will leave today and ahoy to the new friends that arrive for another week of discovery.
